Week 2: Digging Deep and Setting the Foundation

Week two is all about excavation and getting ready to pour the foundation, the literal bedrock of your new home. The excavator continues digging, ensuring a stable base. In some cases, they might test for collapsible soils to prevent future foundation problems. If found, solutions are implemented to ensure a solid foundation.

Next, concrete footings are poured along the perimeter of the house and in other strategic locations to distribute weight evenly and prevent settling. Rebar is inserted into the footings to reinforce the foundation walls. Forms are then erected on top of the footings, creating a mold for the walls.

A specialized pump truck, with its long, extendable arm, is used to pour concrete into the forms, around a rebar cage that ties into the footings. Multiple concrete trucks are needed for this continuous pour. The foundation is then left to cure for at least a week, although most builders allow more time, allowing the concrete to reach its maximum strength. This is a crucial phase, as a strong foundation is essential for a stable and long-lasting home.
